Sisters of the Humility of Mary

Sisters of the Humility of Mary

Since 1854 the Sisters of the Humility of Mary have provided housing, education and healthcare services for children, immigrants and refugees and the elderly.

Humility of Mary Housing Ministry serves as one of many expressions of the mission of the Sisters “of bringing abundant life to God’s people, especially the poor.”

HMHI traces its history and commonly held values back to the unified mission of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.

Our History

In 1987, H.M. Life Opportunity Services began providing housing and supportive services to homeless, single parent families in the Akron area.  At the same time, Villa Maria Residential Services, a 37 unit apartment, was built on the grounds at the Sisters’ Villa Maria Community Center, located between New Castle, Pennsylvania and Youngstown, Ohio, to provide housing for seniors.

Humility of Mary Housing Programs was formed in 1988 to enhance, support and expand the overall housing ministry of the Sisters.  In 1995 its name was changed to Humility of Mary Housing, Inc.  This became the foundation upon which the Humility of Mary Housing Ministry was established and upon which it continues to grow.

The Humility of Mary Housing mission is to promote and strengthen the self-sufficiency of individuals and families, especially the poor, through supportive services and quality housing. It is a mission shared with the Sisters themselves to bring a more abundant life to others.

Since its beginning in 1987, Humility of Mary Housing has grown to where it is now providing housing and supportive services in four northeastern Ohio counties: Lorain, Cuyahoga, Summit and Trumbull. Local communities being served include Wellington, Lorain, Garfield Heights, Northfield Center, Akron, Girard and Youngstown.

Priorities

Humility of Mary HousingIt takes more than providing a home to end homelessness. That’s why Humility of Mary Housing strives to extend opportunity and hope to those in need.

Through our Caring Compass program we concentrate on achieving four major outcomes: (1) Avoid a return to homelessness (2) Obtain educational and job training skills necessary to achieve and maintain independence (3) Increase employment opportunities leading to enhanced financial well-being and (4) Achieve better physical and mental health.
