ABOUT US

We meet the needs. We began by providing transitional housing for single parent homeless families with children. We now have housing programs for seniors and low-income individuals and families. We also work to prevent homelessness by providing emergency assistance of food and clothing as well as rent and utility assistance.

We are a team of people. Ever conscious of our mission and values, we are a team of people who work together to be a compassionate presence to those in need.

We are mission-driven. Our mission flows from our founders, the Sisters of the Humility of Mary who seek “To bring more abundant life to people, especially the poor.” The Sisters have ministered in Northeast Ohio and other parts of the country for amore than 150 years.

We are experienced. We have been doing housing and supportive services for more than twenty years beginning with H.M.Life Opportunity Services in Akron, Ohio in 1987.

We are a regional organization who acts locally. At Humility of Mary Housing we work with others in our system who are providing quality housing and support services to those in need. By working together we improve the quality of the presence and service we bring to those in need on a local level. We centralize many of our business functions, to free our local staff to be hands-on with their program participants.

We continue to grow. By using our resources efficiently we have been able to expand our services in Northeastern Ohio communities to those in need who have requested our assistance.

Sisters of the Humility of Mary

Since 1854 the Sisters of the Humility of Mary have provided housing, education and healthcare services for children, immigrants and refugees and the elderly.

Humility of Mary Housing Ministry serves as one of many expressions of the mission of the Sisters  “of bringing abundant life to God’s people, especially the poor.”

Each ministry under HMHI traces their history and commonly held values back to the unified mission of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary.

Our History

In 1987-88 the first housing ministries emerged with the establishment of three housing organizations sponsored by the Sisters.  H.M. Life Opportunity Services began providing housing and supportive services to homeless, single parent families in the Akron area.  Villa Maria Residential Services, a 37 unit apartment, was built on the grounds at the Sisters’ Villa Maria Community Center, located between New Castle, Pennsylvania and Youngstown, Ohio, to provide housing for seniors.

Humility of Mary Housing Programs was formed to enhance, support and expand the overall housing ministry of the Sisters.  In 1995 its name was changed to Humility of Mary Housing, Inc.  These ministries are the foundation upon which the Humility of Mary Housing Ministry was established and upon which it continues to grow.

Since 1997 Humility of Mary Housing Inc. has served as the umbrella or Member corporation for all the Humility of Mary housing entities.  Its mission is to empower, strengthen and increase the self-reliance of individuals and families, especially the poor, through supportive services and quality housing.  It is a mission shared with all the housing entities and with the Sisters themselves as it is based on bringing a more abundant life to others.

Since its beginning in 1987, the housing ministry has grown to 10 organizations covering a five county region.  Services include providing housing, case management, emergency assistance, and food and clothing to those in need.  We have entities in Wellington, Lorain, Garfield Heights, Akron, Northfield Center, Girard and Youngstown.

Priorities

It takes more than providing a home to end homelessness. That’s why the Humility of Mary Housing Ministry strives to extend opportunity and hope to those in need.

Our family, transitional and senior housing facilities integrate programs and services with quality, affordable housing. Life skills development parenting, budgeting, self-esteem, as well as information on health options, in-home services and career choices are offered to participants with an end goal of self-reliance.
